Education and Extension

The third arm of Tall Timbers' mission is Education! Education is arguably the most important component of the Outreach Program because it gives us the opportunity to interact with and share the knowledge we have learned here at the station through our collective research, conservation efforts and experience gained over the past several decades with you. The types and modes of education/extension vary as widely and uniquely as our research programs themselves and will likely range from learning basic principles in GIS/GPS to Fire Ecology to Game Bird management to general natural resource and habitat manipulation. Currently, the Outreach program staff are serving and sharing information with the community through teaching GIS workshops, providing landowner visitation and consultation, and hosting short courses and topical luncheons. In the future, we hope to expand our educational and extension opportunities.

These GIS workshops are typically for those interested in creating detailed maps, performing geospatial analysis, and learning how to better archive, view and share spatial data. The workshops take a natural resource and conservation directed focus and exercises are developed to benefit conservation planners, ecologists, and wildlife biologists. We currently are offering three levels of GIS workshops. For more information on these GIS workshops click here.
Landowner Visitation and Consultation
We are available to visit with you to provide general habitat and land management recommendations as it aligns with our research and mission here at Tall Timbers. We are also available to produce maps and GIS database systems for properties to aid in land and resource management. Likewise, we are available to work with you to develop tailored resource and land management tools and solutions such as web mapping applications and GIS tools, if so desired. To find out more information feel free to Email Theron Terhune.

Starting in the Spring of 2012, we will be hosting an annual half-day luncheon for land managers and property owners in the Red Hills region. The purpose of these luncheons will vary from year to year but will primarily focus on a single topic that should help the general land manager and/or land owner to more efficiently manage their property or provide them a mechanism to aid in evaluating the effectiveness of their management actions through data collection, data viewing, and data sharing. We fully expect to learn as much from the land managers and land owners as we hope that they might learn from us during these luncheons! The first luncheon topic will be: Using GIS and GPS for Effective Habitat Management. If you are interested in attending this luncheon Email Theron Terhune.
