What are GIS, GPS, and Remote Sensing?

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is computer hardware and software used to capture, store, analyze, and display spatial data. Remote sensing is a method of using images to derive information about a location on the earth’s surface from a distance. GPS (Global Positioning System) technology is a system of satellites and a receiver which allows a user to map or navigate using geographic position.

Tall Timbers maintains a fully equipped GIS and Computer Lab offering ArcGIS, ArcView, ERDAS Imagine, and a suite of other statistical and modeling software programs to assist our users with their GIS and remote sensing needs. In addition to the Computer Lab, each of the Research programs and the Land Conservancy program has ArcGIS, and ArcView available in their individual offices. In addition, each research program at Tall Timbers has the latest GPS technology available for data collection and navigation.

Information Technology

The IS department supports a network that consists of four Windows 2000 and 2003 based servers and roughly forty-seven Windows XP and Vista end-users systems. These systems handle a wide range of productivity tasks for Tall Timbers’ staff including email communication via Exchange, GIS development and analysis, research collaboration, data queries, and organization operation. The network operates on a gigabit fiber backbone that extends throughout the entire campus. In addition, the Information Systems department maintains a series of weather stations that gather hourly data to assist scientists in their research. The data gathered from the system located at Tall Timbers is published on Weather Underground for public viewing.

We anticipate a year of great change for the upcoming 2008 fiscal year. Tall Timbers will begin a comprehensive server implementation and restructuring project in January 2008. This undertaking will provide the data processing and storage capacity vital to bringing the organization into the year 2012. In addition, Tall Timbers will also be streamlining its backup process and storage capacity to coincide with the increasing requirements.

Please contact the Network Administrator with any questions that may have regarding the Information Systems at Tall Timbers.
