Joint Fire Science Program Grant 06-2-1-31: Validation of National Burn Severity Mapping Techniques in Selected Southeastern US Ecosystems

Project Objectives:

Improve the ability of managers in the southeastern Coastal Plain to accurately document fire perimeters and measure classes of burn severity that have resulted from both wildfires and prescribed burns.

Methodologies:

Validate the use of satellite reflectance data to estimate on-the-ground burn severity. Remotely-sensed satellite burn severity data has been compared with field collected burn severity data.

Status:

We are currently analyzing and synthesizing all data collected during the 2007 and 2008 field seasons.
